Jon’s childhood was marked by hardship, growing up with an abusive father and a drug-addicted mother facing financial struggles. At age 8, he was placed in foster care with his grandparents, but later returned to his mother once she regained sobriety. Throughout his youth, his mother’s relationships were tumultuous, with one boyfriend being abusive and another struggling with alcoholism. At 14, Jon had his first manic breakdown, which led to a diagnosis of Bipolar Type 1 and Schizoaffective Disorder, a condition common in his paternal family. After receiving psychiatric care, Jon began seeing a psychiatrist who he still works with today.
Throughout high school, Jon worked multiple jobs, including as a dishwasher and grocery store associate, while battling his mental health challenges. He found solace in music, learning guitar and eventually playing in a band. After becoming emancipated, he moved in with his bandmate and best friend. In 2007, Jon graduated high school and worked as a CNC Operator for four years before moving to Columbus in 2011, where he held various jobs.
In 2014, after a period of job loss and financial struggles, Jon experienced a second manic breakdown and was hospitalized for a month. At his lowest point, he had attempted suicide but realized he was meant to help others. This realization led to the creation of Mental Health United, an organization dedicated to advocating for mental health awareness and supporting those in need. Since founding the organization, Jon has spoken at conferences and universities nationwide, passionately fighting against the stigma surrounding mental illness. He has also worked with local nonprofits and NAMI to enhance outreach and raise awareness of mental health services.
